Summary:
The City Fleet Maintenance Shop, staffed by 13 skilled employees, is responsible for the upkeep of 687 city assets, including light and heavy-duty vehicles, emergency apparatus, and specialized equipment. The team performs preventive maintenance, repairs, drop-offs, and a wide range of operational support tasks to ensure the City’s fleet remains safe, reliable, and mission ready. Through efficient scheduling and skilled in-house repairs, Staff minimizes downtime, extends the life of vehicles, and supports all departments in delivering essential services to the community.
Background Discussion:
The City Fleet Maintenance Shop plays a critical role in supporting City operations by ensuring that all fleet assets are safe, reliable, and available when needed. Currently, the shop maintains a total of 687 assets with a team of 13 employees, providing preventive maintenance, repairs, and other essential services. The fleet includes a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, ranging from light-duty cars and trucks to heavy-duty trucks, emergency vehicles, and specialized equipment for public works, police, fire, parks, and other departments.
Through proactive maintenance and efficient in-house repairs, the shop successfully keeps 98% of the fleet up and operational at any given time, minimizing downtime and extending vehicle life while maintaining compliance with safety, and regulatory standards. Annually, the shop completes approximately 1,500 preventive maintenance work orders and 3,605 repair work orders, demonstrating the team’s dedication and productivity. Given the size and diversity of the fleet, the shop must efficiently schedule and prioritize work orders to meet operational demands, while addressing challenges such as aging equipment, increasing technological, and budget constraints.
The work of the Fleet Maintenance Shop directly impacts the City’s ability to provide critical services to the public, including emergency response, utilities, public safety, and community services. Continued investment in staff training, tools, and maintenance processes ensures the fleet remains mission ready and supports the City’s commitment to safety, reliability, environmental compliance, and fiscal responsibility.
